Set on the West Australian coast and inspired by the myth of the Selkie, Skin is a contemporary folk-pop musical that opens an elemental, impressionistic window into a world of yearning, queer identity, and the parts of ourselves we so savagely cut ourselves off from.
The story begins when Siobh discovers a hidden photo album while clearing out their mother Cath's old house. The album reveals Cath's secret past relationship with a woman named Heather, and as the tide of memory washes over them, it threatens to reveal the secrets Cath has kept buried for years. With music that blends the musical traditions of Japan with the sensibilities of western folk, the songs are achingly honest examinations of love, regret, and the deep longing we all have for connection.
Originally developed at NYU Tisch's Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program, Skin premiered Off-Broadway at Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre as part of the 2022 Global Forms Theatre Festival, presented as a four-week Equity workshop to sold-out audiences.
